Product Review - M-Audio Fast Track Ultra

As far as multi-tracking interfaces go, it doesn't get much better than the M-Audio Fast Track Ultra. For what I use it for, it couldn't be better. It has the ability to record up to six different inputs all simultaneously into different tracks on your DAW software, which is a crucial feature to have if you are recording drums, acoustic instruments, or other instruments that need to be miked in multiple spots. At $350, it got the job done without breaking the band - which is always one of my top priorities.

Continue reading as I go into detail about the pros and cons of this wonderful piece of equipment, and you'll see why I recommend it so avidly to those who are serious about recording:

As a recording engineer, it is essential to have the ability to multi-track. A common misconception among beginners is that one can simply purchase a standard USB mixer and use it to record multiple sound sources. While these types of mixers technically do offer recording capability, the problem remains that they lack the ability to multi-track. In other words, when you try to record from multiple inputs on a standard USB mixer, it will all mix down into one audio track on your DAW software. This severely limits your flexibility when it comes to editing - you will not be able to individually mix each track that you record.
This is why multi-tracking interfaces are so useful in the industry. Without them, it is impossible to adequately record things like drums and acoustic pianos.

That being said, not all multi-tracking interfaces are created equally. Here are some pros and cons to one of my personal favorites - the M-Audio Fast Track Ultra.

PROS -

The Fast Track Ultra's most impressive feature is its sound quality. While there are cheaper multi-tracking interfaces that are similar, none offer the high end preamps that the Fast Track does. This is a must when looking for a device that can produce professional quality recordings.
Another benefit of the Fast Track is it's flexibility. It offers a total of 4 XLR preamps, two of which are hybrids that also allow a 1/4 inch instrument cable to be connected. In addition, each preamp has alternative 1/4 inch inputs on the back of the interface, and there are two extra 1/4 inch inputs that add an additional two channels. There are a total of 6 output channels that support both 1/4 inch and TRS cables - plenty of options for connecting speakers/monitors. Another cool feature is that there are two separate headphone outputs, with unique volume control for each. This is more useful than you may think - you never know when you'll need more than one set of headphones! It is easy to take advantage of the many options the Fast Track offers - as you can see I highly recommend it.

CONS -

While they are few and far between, the Fast Track Ultra does have a few drawbacks that are worth mentioning. It is on the expensive side, and actually for the money you could probably get an interface that offers more inputs. However, the preamps would not be as good - so it's all about your preferences on quality vs. quantity. If you have a full set of drum mic's, then I actually wouldn't recommend the Fast Track Ultra. Rather, you should invest in something that can accommodate your setup. It would be silly to not be able to use all of the mic's you have at your disposal!
Another drawback to the Fast Track is that there aren't volume controls for the extra two 1/4 inputs. While you can still multi-track with those two inputs, you cannot control the gain on the interface itself which can prove to be a major issue.

Other than those few points, the M-Audio Fast Track Ultra is a fantastic investment for those wishing to become serious about recording. I highly recommend it to everyone, but before you make the decision to buy it you should definitely do some research and find out if it is right for you! If you have any questions of the product, feel free to leave them in the comments!

As always, thanks for tuning in,
-Cecil
